Family Goals
Many times, people will carefully evaluate their family and come to realize that it is not the family that they expected it to be. It is not that they do not love and appreciate the family members that are a part of their family. It is just that the family has not accomplished the goals that the member who is evaluating feels that they should have. If you evaluate your family, and see that things are inconsistent with your expectations, or the original goals that you created for the family, it may be time to set some new family goals.
If you wish to set new family goals, there are numerous ways that you can do so. Many families choose to implement the “smart” method. “Smart” is simply an acronym that many families put into place in order to accomplish their family goals. If you wish to implement the “smart” method of make sure your family goals are accomplished, you will need to know what it stands for.
SMART
S – The “S” in smart refers to “Specific Goals”. It is always best when you can set specific family goals instead of general family goals. For example, if you want to save money, do more than set that as your family goal. A specific goal would be to save at least $3,000.00 in a year, and so on.
M- The “M” in smart refers to “Measure”. You should be able to measure the family goals that you set. If you are unable to set family goals that you can measure, those goals will not be easy to accomplish.
A- The “A” stands for “Action”. The family goals that you set should be backed by an action plan that each member of the family should have an active role in. If there is not an action plan, the family goals that you set will not be easily accomplished.
R – The “R” stands for “Realistic”. The family goals that you set should be realistic. If they are not be realistic, each member of the family will end up being very disappointed.
T – The “T” stands for “Tactic”. Each family goal that you set should be accomplished by some sort of tactic that you and the rest of the family agree on.
It is important when you choose to set family goals that you communicate your wishes to the rest of the family. You should implement the suggestions of each family member on ways to accomplish the family goals that you set. It is important to be there for each other, through success and failure. If you find that the “smart” system to achieving family goals is not working for you, you should revisit it and find a way to meet your family goals. There are many ways to set family goals, but one way to accomplish family goals and that is to work together!
